Area guide
Everything you shouldn't miss, sorted by how close it is. Approximate driving distances and times from the house.
One of the best-preserved Atlantic riverside forests in Europe. Trails among oaks, ferns and waterfalls follow the river Eume, deep in nature. There's an interpretation centre and several walking routes of varying difficulty.
Tip: in high season (summer, Easter) car access to the interior may be restricted and a shuttle runs from Pontedeume. Go early, bring water and shoes that can get wet.
Directions from the houseA medieval monastery (founded in the 10th century) perched above the Eume canyon, surrounded by forest — the most iconic image of the Fragas. It's reached after a lovely walk from the car park, and the views from the top are unforgettable.
Tip: pair it with a picnic by the river. The mid-afternoon light on the stone is pure magic for photos.
Directions from the houseA beautiful medieval town on the estuary, with arcaded streets, the Andrade Tower and its historic bridge. Atmosphere, shops, terraces and first-rate seafood. The Saturday market is worth the trip.
Tip: park by the estuary and wander the old town up to the tower. A great spot for lunch.
Directions from the houseA long fine-sand beach backed by a pine grove, facing Pontedeume across the estuary. Calm, shallow water — the best option for a family beach day.
Tip: the shade of the pines is perfect on the hottest days. Nearby, don't miss the little Chanteiro beach.
Directions from the houseA city with a naval soul: the grid-planned Enlightenment quarter of A Madalena, the military Arsenal and the San Felipe Castle that once guarded the entrance to the estuary. Good shopping, dining and culture.
Tip: visit the San Felipe Castle and stroll around A Madalena. In spring, its Holy Week is of International Tourist Interest.
Directions from the houseMiles of sand open to the Atlantic beside the Frouxeira lagoon, a protected wetland ideal for birdwatching. Nature, walking and waves all in one place.
Tip: combine a swim at the beach with a walk around the lagoon at dusk, when the birds arrive.
Directions from the houseOne of the best waves in Europe and home of the Pantín Classic, an international surf event held in late summer. Golden sand, a surf vibe and schools for beginners.
Tip: even if you don't surf, it's worth watching the show from the beach. If the contest is on, arrive early.
Directions from the houseA large Atlantic beach near Ferrol, with good surf and a lagoon behind it. One of the best spots in the area to watch the sun drop into the sea.
Tip: go late with something to nibble and stay for the sunset. Unforgettable.
